Children of Matisse: Fauve Village Scene, Ceret, Ca 1930, French Woman Artist Ferrandier Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

Like Brianchon, Oudot and Cavaillès, Gisèle Ferrandier was among the artists termed "The Children of Matisse" ... and it is easy to see why. With the colours of her delicate and luminous palette, Gisèle transforms reality, without rejecting it.

Here is a wonderful eary work by her, dating from the early 1930s. Depicted is almost certainl the village square of Ceret in the Pyrenees, a village popular with artists and intelligensia at the time. Picasso, Braque, the poet Max Jacob, Chaim Soutine, Juan Gris and Marc Chagall all spent time and worked there. See attachet a view of the Ceret village square by Pinchus Kregmegne!

Like most of the women artists active durng the first half of the twentieth century, Gisèle was modern, fearless and a traveller: she worked in Morocco and Spain. Paintings by her are now in the collections of the museums of Marseille, Toulouse, Bayeux, Ceret and Pau. A large retrospective exhibition of her work was shown at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris in 1970.

Measuring 55 x 46 cm, our painting by Gisèle Ferrandier is unsigned, but will be sold with a certificate of authenticity by our gallery. For reference, please see the image of a signed work by the artist from the same period, attached.

The painting of art has been mounted on to new stretcher bars. It is presented in a handmade and hand patinated frame that was signed by the artisan on the verso. The overall framed size is 70 x 61 cm
