Oil Painting by Winifred Wilson

A fine and decorative oil on canvas by Winifred Wilson 1877-1955. The work shows stone steps in a country house garden, possibly Haddon Hall in Derbyshire. The steps are wonderfully worn and overgrown with forget-me-nots dotting them. The piece is an exercise in light and shade and works wonderfully. The work is signed to the lower right ‘Winifred Wilson’. Winifred Wilson (1877-1955) was a Sheffield painter in oils and a farmer by occupation. She studied privately under Arnesby Brown and exhibited widely including works at the Royal Academy, Liverpool, Royal Institute and locally including at the Sheffield Society of Artists of which she was a member. She also exhibited internationally at the Paris Salon and in America. The Graves Art Gallery in Sheffield holds her work. She was a sister of the painters May and Violet Wilson and lived at Barlow, near Sheffield. This piece is a wonderful example of her work and is in excellent condition. The painting retains the original gilt frame which is also numbered indicating the piece was part of an exhibition. The whole has a wonderful bright and cheerful presence and is ready to hang. C.1940.
