Autumnal Oil Painting by Adam E Proctor

A fine oil on canvas autumnal scene by Adam Edwin Proctor 1864-1913. The work shows a scene across a lake where swans are swimming and looks to a country house in the distance, all is worked in the hazy colours of Autumn. The painting is signed and dated to the lower right ‘Adam E Proctor RBA’ and the date has been somewhat erased and I think it may have been 1900. Adam Edwin Proctor 1864-1913 was a painter of genre scenes and landscapes. He studied at the Lambeth & Westminster Schools of Art under Frederick Brown, whose style was heavily influenced by the great James McNeill Whistler which in turn influenced Proctor. Proctor was made a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1891 and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1909. He exhibited widely and prolifically including 34 works at The Royal Academy and an amazing 241 at the Royal Society of British Artists, as well as at every other major society. This work is in excellent condition it has been cleaned and professional restoration made to a tear as can be seen by the patch on the back of the canvas. The painting is framed in a superb period gilt swept frame which has been overgilt at some point. The whole is a beautiful example of this highly desirable artist’s work and is ready to hang.
