Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
The tone of the work is dark and shadowy as befits the interior of a stable and the quality of the work is very good. The painting is signed to the lower right with what appears to be Birks and dated 1888. The name Birks is not recorded and I think it is most likely that this was a commercial artist who did not exhibit, they may have been a signwriter as the work has this studied look. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition with some minor repairs. The fine gilt frame is the original, it retains the original gilding and has had some restoration. The whole has a great look and is of a large size that gives a huge decorative impact.
Overall sizes in inches including frame: 35 ½ by 26 ½
