Long shadows extend across melting snow cast by the sinuous forms of barren trees. A peculiar glow radiates from a blanket of white. In the foreground, a village track is furrowed amid dense mud. While several cottages provide a welcoming refuge.
Vigerslev is a neighbourhood in Copenhagen, which Hornung-Jensen knew well. He was born and died in the city, adventuring abroad for study trips before returning home. Here he describes the snow with broad marks, echoing the undulant scenery. Note the strong verticals towards the centre of the composition. Confident handling.
Signed in the lower left and held within a gilt frame with coved sides.
