This fine late 19th-century Danish oil painting depicts a still life with roses.

Two exquisitely rendered roses are nestled among leaves and buds. Emerging into the light from a dark array of tangled foliage. Each petal has been carefully observed akin to a botanical study. Yet described with such mastery that the overall effect is both beautiful and bewitching. Note also the various positions of each leaf.

Danish stills from this period were often inspired by the ‘Father of Danish Flower Painting’, Johan Laurentz Jensen (1800-1856) who, in turn, took heed from the Dutch Old Masters.

Housed in a splendid gilt frame with foliate.
