Developed in the late 19th century, crystoleum was a decorative technique where an albumen photograph was adhered to convex glass, rendered translucent with wax, and hand-painted from the back to combine photograph precision with oil painting depth.

These items were crafted using convex glass panels, albumen print photographs, oil paints, and binding waxes, usually housed inside carved wooden or moulded composite frames.

Authentic pieces feature curved convex glass, multi-layered painting applied behind the photographic outline, and original dark timber or gilded plaster frames showing appropriate age-related oxidisation.

Display the framed piece on a mantelpiece or shelf using an easel, or arrange it as part of a gallery wall alongside period sketches and brass accents to complement contemporary interiors.

Dust the frame and front glass lightly with a soft microfibre cloth without using harsh chemical liquids or water, as moisture can seep behind the frame and damage the paint layers.
