A Fine Pair Of Watercolour Paintings By James Burrell Smith
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Prometheus Antiques
A fine pair of watercolours by the highly regarded artist James Burrell Smith 1824-1897. The two scenes are quite small and are likely either commissions or personal works. The pair retain the details of the landscapes on the reverse which have been copied and fixed to the back. One view is of Greystoke Castle in Cumbria and the other is Arundel Castle, Sussex, from the north side, early morning. The two works are signed and dated on the front 1889 though these are obscured by the frames. The Arundel Castle work does say sketched in 1855 and it may well be that it was a work taken from an earlier sketch from the artist’s youth. James Burrell Smith 1824-1897 was born in London but spent most of his life and is most closely associated with Alnwick in Northumberland. He was taught by Thomas Miles Richardson and become a landscape and watercolourist of note. He exhibited at The Sussex Street Gallery through 1850-1881. Burrell Smith has become famous for his ability to paint water and in pa...rticular rivers and waterfalls, his works nearly always feature water and often fisherman. These pair are framed in the original wonderful quality frames which are in great untouched condition and retain the original gilding. The two works are both in good condition with no marks and little fading. The pair are great examples of this highly regarded watercolourist’s work and together have a great decorative impact.
