Landscape Oil Painting Of Belvoir Castle

A great early nineteenth century oil on oak panel depicting Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, home of the Dukes of Rutland. The work is beautifully done in the typical fashion of the late Georgian period with a light touch. The view shows the castle as it is perched majestically on a hill overlooking the valley. The view also has some nice touches in the stables and walled garden that can be seen and a rustic summerhouse just off to the left. The painting is not signed though this is not unusual for this type of provincial work but it can be dated from similar views. The castle was often the subject of paintings even Turner created a work and the various stages of construction make them relatively easy to date and this would have been made C.1810. The painting is in excellent untouched condition probably only ever having been cleaned sometime in the past.
