Richard Earlom After Jan Van Huysum, Still Life with Flowers - Hand-coloured Mezzotint

18th century
Description

This sumptuous 18th-century mezzotint engraving by Richard Earlom (1743-1822) is after a work by Dutch luminary Jan Van Huysum (1682-1749).

In the late 18th century, Richard Earlom was commissioned as part of a printmaking project to reproduce Sir Robert Walpole’s extensive painting collection at The Houghton Gallery. The project was initiated when it became evident that the collection would need to be sold - eventually to Catherine of Russia in 1778.

Earlom was particularly admired for his work involving florals and this is an excellent example of his talent. Identical uncoloured flower pieces have sold through Christie's for up to £2,750. The colouring is accomplished and dynamic.

Published by John Boydell (1720-1804).
