This portrait was likely commissioned as a keepsake to be sent home to this young officer’s beloved before he set out on campaign. The portrait is set in the original gold clasp frame that would have been strung with pearls or with plaited hair to be worn as a bracelet. There is some fading to the face and a small spot of paint loss to the outside edge but otherwise the piece is in good condition.
