Description

This early 20th-century English watercolour depicts a busy Venetian waterway with several sailboats and numerous figures.

Working from a moored boat, the artist has captured the canal from a low vantage point. This unusual technique draws us closer to the scene as if we’re sitting alongside them under a bright Italian sky. The crowd on the far side is buzzing with vibrancy while the water is rendered in a range of shimmering tones.

The artist is unknown but it’s similar to a Venetian scene by William Todd-Brown (1875-1952).

Framed and glazed.
