Philippe De Rougemont, Portrait of a Lady in an Evening Gown - Oil Painting

1940 - 1960
Description

This mid-20th-century portrait by French artist Philippe De Rougemont (1891-1965) depicts a lady wearing a beautiful green evening gown with a fur stole and pearl earrings.

Philippe De Rougemont was born in France but spent most of his life in Stockholm, Sweden. As such, he was quite a novelty and in high demand within fashionable circles. His wife, Sigrid, was also a painter and the two met during their studies in Paris.

Philippe received numerous high-profile commissions throughout his career including several from Swedish dignitaries. Each time, seeking to encapsulate the sitter’s spirit while also capturing a good likeness. Here, our sitter conveys a gentle quality and her eyes reflect a quiet strength.

Held in a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 28½” x 34½” / 72cm x 88cm

Year of creation: c. 1950

Condition: Artwork presents well. Frame with some light wear.

Artist’s auction maximum: £2,786

French artist Philippe De Rougemont is predominantly known for his spirited figures and portraits in oil. Hailing from Lille in France, he soon moved to Paris to study at the Académie Delecluse - and while living in the French capital, met his future wife Sigrid Wahlström who was also undertaking artistic training. By 1919, the pair had settled in Stockholm, to establish a studio and raise a family. Here, Philippe became known for producing rhythmically-charged enigmatic portraits - including several for Swedish dignitaries, and he’s represented in several public collections.
