Georgian Mahogany Folding Dumbwaiter

18th century
Description

A Very Good Quality George III Period, Late 18th Century, Mahogany Folding Dumbwaiter Having Three Well Figured Circualr Tiers, With Folding Drop Flaps, United By Elegant Turned Central Support, Terminating On Tripod Legs With Fluted Decoration And Original Brass Castors.

Dumb waiters, which are often referred to as buffets, or whatnots, were generally made as an additional piece of occasional furniture, used in the dining room for the storage of food and drink which is about to be served. They were quite often made in pairs, or even larger groups for large country houses and the first references to their use appears to have been around the middle of the 18th century.

Following on from dinner, once the ladies had retired to a different room, the dumbwaiters would be moved across and loaded with drink and cigars, allowing the gentleman to help themselves to whatever they may require throughout the course of the rest of the evening.

This is a nice example of its type, sporting three tiers instead of the more common two tiers which are found on the folding examples and constructed from good quality mahogany timbers. It also boasts real elegance and sophistication.

Circa 1800

Height 46in.

Top Tier Diameter 15.5in.

Middle Tier Diameter 19.5in.

Bottom Tier Diameter 24in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dumbwaiter is a tiered side table developed in the 18th century, featuring multiple circular shelves mounted on a central axis. It was designed to enable diners to serve themselves without servants remaining in the dining room.

Georgian dumbwaiters were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany, featuring lathe-turned central columns, brass folding hinges, and brass socket castors on the base legs.

Authentic Georgian examples display graduated tier sizes, hand-cut joinery, turned column details, natural wood oxidisation, and period-correct brass hardware.

A tiered dumbwaiter functions as an occasional side table beside armchairs, a plant display stand in an entrance hall, or a multi-level accent table in a dining room corner.

Dust surfaces using a clean microfibre cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally along the wood grain, keeping the timber away from central heating radiators and direct sunlight.
