Description

Edmond Sigrist (1882- 1947) loved the South of France. An artist with a special interest in colours and light - art critic Gérard Schurr remarked on the "delicate subtlety" of his palette the luminosity of Provence suited his painting perfectly.

Our wonderful and immensely poetic "walker in the olive grove" was created there.

Sigrist had studied with Luc-Olivier Merson (by whom we have a drawing in our inventory!) at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He sexhibited at the Salon des Indépendants from 1910, as well as at the Salon d'Automme. His work was regulary on show at the Gallery Druet from 1922 to 1932 - who also has Pierre Bonnard in under contract in these years, just to give you an idea of their importance! Highly regarded by his fellow artists, sculptor Chana Orfloff sculped his portrait.

Works by Sigrist are now in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris as well as in regional museums.

Our oil on paper laid on to canvas by the artist dates from circa 1925 and is signed at the lower right. On the verso, we find the artist's Paris address at square Desnouettes, as well as inforrmation where the artwork was painted: on the southern slopes of the Alpilles in the heart of the Natural Regional Park of the Alpilles, at Maussane.

Measuring 46 x 54 cm, the picture is presented in its original and very beautiful hand carved and patinated frame. The overall size is 63 x 72 cm.
