While two small vessels bravely battle the elements, rising and falling with the rippling waves. Berthelsen has captured the conditions adroitly - selecting a composition which guides the eye from left to right and out across the sea. He’s narrating the story of an incoming storm and building tension through dramatic light effects.
Berthelsen studied the old masters closely and had a keen eye for intelligent design. Although, unlike some of his peers, he was primarily self-taught so his details are a little rustic. As such, his works convey an easy-going provincial quality that adds charm and character.
Monogrammed/dated and held within a gilt frame.

Danish artist Christian Berthelsen is predominantly known for his landscapes in oil, which often capture views from the rural environs of Svendborg. He began his artistic career as a porcelain painter before pursuing his true vocation. Primarily self-taught, he honed his skills by studying the masters at the National Gallery. His works are held in at least two public collections.
