Horse and Donkey Oil Painting by John Alfred Wheeler

A charming oil on canvas depicting a horse and donkey in a stable by the artist John Alfred Wheeler. The work skilfully depicts the animals within the shelter with a rather wonderful view of the landscape outside. The piece is signed to the lower left ‘J Wheeler’. John Alfred Wheeler was a specialist painter of horses and dogs, he was hugely successful and prolific often painting popular works more than once. Wheeler was the founder of a family of artists and his sons and grandsons worked in a similar style making it possible the work could also be by one of them. The painting has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition. The work retains the original frame which has had many repairs and overpaint over the years but still works very well, giving the whole a faded country house look. The piece is a fine work by a great animal artist. C.1880.
