Victorian Moonlight Oil Painting Of Brighton

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

An interesting and decorative naļve school oil on canvas painting of Brighton by moonlight. The scene shows the seafront with boats pulled onto the shore and in the distance can be seen the famous Royal Suspension Chain Pier which was destroyed in 1896. The nature of the painting is very much in the folk-art naļve school with a great use of colour to depict this atmospheric nighttime scene. The work is signed to the lower left and dated: H.M.Ash 1876. The painting has been professionally cleaned and very minor holes repaired. The frame is the original and has been overgilt and had some repairs over the years. The piece is an interesting historical view of Brighton and a highly decorative work with all the drama of a night scene. It is also a great naļve folk-art piece with a huge amount of that appeal and charm.

Overall sizes in inches including frame: 39 by 29
