How do I hang a heavy wooden wall barometer?

Secure the barometer directly into wall studs or utilise heavy-duty wall anchors rated for the specific weight of the timber case. Ensure the hanging bracket on the rear is firmly attached to the wood structure before releasing the piece. Verify that the instrument hangs completely vertical so internal mechanical linkages operate without friction or binding.

Are mercury barometers safe to keep at home?

Enclosed mercury stick barometers contain liquid sealed securely within glass tubes under normal conditions. As long as the instrument remains mounted safely on the wall and undisturbed, the mercury presents no hazard. Avoid attempting to dismantle or transport mercury barometers without securing the reservoir to prevent glass breakage and liquid spillage.

How do I tell an aneroid barometer from a mercury one?

Aneroid barometers display measurements on a round dial face with a rotating pointer needle, much like a clock. They contain no visible liquid columns inside the case. Mercury barometers feature a vertical glass tube where a silver-grey column rises and falls against a calibrated scale, often accompanied by a separate thermometer.

Do antique barometers still give accurate weather readings?

Many antique barometers remain functional and respond accurately to local atmospheric pressure changes after proper calibration. Adjusting the small screw at the back aligns the needle with known local barometric pressure. Older mechanisms can become sluggish over decades, requiring professional cleaning and servicing of the internal linkages to restore full responsiveness.
