What is a silver table?

A silver table is a small table featuring a raised tray top designed for serving tea or displaying silver pieces. These forms date back to the eighteenth century. They often incorporate cabriole legs and removable tray tops to facilitate serving.

How were tray top tables used?

Tray top tables served as movable surfaces for afternoon tea and the display of valuable tableware. The raised edges kept vessels secure during transport. Servants could lift the tray top entirely from the table base to clear or set the tea service.

What woods are typical?

Mahogany forms the primary timber across most periods, including specialised variants like Cuban mahogany. Walnut, burr walnut, satinwood, and ebonised wood also appear. Makers selected these hardwoods for their durability and capacity to take fine carved details.

How do I identify a Georgian piece?

Georgian pieces display specific stylistic traits such as Chippendale carving, cabriole legs, or George III proportions. Materials typically include solid mahogany. Construction methods from this era involve traditional joinery without modern fasteners.
