How do I date a cabinet?

Dating relies upon timber selection, construction methods, and stylistic cues present in the woodwork and hardware. Later Edwardian versions often display lighter satinwood inlay, whereas mid-nineteenth-century examples utilise heavier timber proportions.

Can shelves be adjusted?

Many traditional bookcases and display units feature adjustable wooden shelving supported by rack systems or metal pins. Early built-in variants sometimes utilise fixed timber ledges set into grooved interior walls.

Where should I place it?

Positioning these cabinets away from direct sunlight protects the polished mahogany surfaces from fading over time. Placing them on stable floor surfaces ensures that glazed doors hang properly and latch securely.

What maintenance is needed?

Routine upkeep involves dusting timber surfaces with a soft cloth and occasionally applying suitable beeswax. Avoiding excessive moisture prevents warping in the structural joints and preserves the glass framing.
