How do I date a wooden chest of drawers?

Dating relies on examining construction techniques, timber choices, and hardware styles across periods like Georgian, Victorian, and Edwardian. Hand-cut dovetails and native woods often indicate earlier origins, while machine-cut elements point towards the twentieth century. Changes in handles, escutcheons, and secondary woods like pine or oak also provide reliable clues for establishing the era of manufacture.

What is the difference between a commode and a chest of drawers?

Historically, a commode refers to a low, ornate cabinet or chest with doors or drawers, often associated with French or serpentine Georgian designs. A standard chest of drawers focuses primarily on stacked drawer storage. In modern parlance, the terms occasionally overlap, but commodes generally denote more decorative, freestanding pieces intended for prominent display in principal rooms.

Are these drawers suitable for modern bedrooms?

These pieces integrate seamlessly into contemporary living spaces, offering robust construction and generous storage capacities that modern furniture rarely matches. Their classic timber finishes bring natural texture to neutral interiors. Careful measurement of ceiling height and floor space ensures that larger items, such as tallboys or linen presses, fit comfortably without overwhelming the room.

How should I care for antique wooden furniture?

Maintaining antique timber involves keeping pieces away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature shifts, which can cause wood to warp or veneers to lift. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish. Applying a quality beeswax periodically nourishes the wood and enhances the natural lustre without building up heavy chemical residues.
