How were vintage washstands used originally?

These pieces served as the primary washing station in bedrooms before running water became standard in homes. Water was heated elsewhere, poured into the basin from the matching jug, and used alongside soap for morning and evening routines. Today, they function as decorative side tables, hallway furniture, or characterful washbasin supports in modern bathrooms with specialised plumbing adaptations.

Are jug and bowl sets waterproof?

Most antique ceramics hold water perfectly well for display or gentle everyday use, though historic glazes can sometimes develop fine internal crazing over centuries. Avoid leaving standing water in older earthenware or ironstone for extended periods to protect the antique glaze from staining.

How do I tell Georgian washstands from Victorian ones?

Georgian pieces generally display lighter, more restrained proportions in mahogany, frequently taking the form of corner stands or delicate tripod basin holders. Victorian and Edwardian examples tend to be heavier, incorporating substantial marble tops, tiled splashbacks, and robust pine or walnut cabinetry designed for larger bedrooms.

Can I use a vintage washstand in a modern bathroom?

Many buyers adapt these wooden stands to hold modern drop-in basins and contemporary plumbing fixtures. You will need a specialist to cut the timber or marble top carefully to accommodate modern waste pipes. Sealing the wood against bathroom moisture is essential to preserve the antique finish for years to come.
