How do I clean rosewood chairs?

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally applying a quality beeswax to nourish the timber. Avoid modern silicone sprays or excessive moisture, which can damage the delicate grain and loosen old veneer. Keep the chairs away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the rosewood from drying out and splitting over time. Gentle care preserves the natural lustre of the wood.

Can these chairs handle daily dining?

Most nineteenth-century dining chairs were built for regular domestic use using robust joinery techniques like mortise and tenon. However, their age means they benefit from mindful handling rather than heavy-handed treatment. Check the stability of the frames periodically to ensure the glue joints remain firm. Lighter daily use suits them best, and professional tightening safeguards their structural longevity.

How do I tell Regency from Victorian?

Regency chairs generally display clean architectural lines, classical proportions, and frequently incorporate brass inlay or sabre legs. They lean toward neoclassical restraint and lighter visual weight. Victorian chairs, by contrast, embrace more curved silhouettes, such as balloon backs, and heavier, deeply carved ornamentation. The timber on Victorian pieces can also appear darker and more robustly proportioned.

Are replacement fabrics acceptable?

Upholstery on antique chairs is frequently replaced to match modern interior aesthetics or to repair worn textiles. Re-covering does not diminish the historical value of the timber frame as long as the underlying structure remains original. Traditional stuffing materials and methods are often preferred by purists during restoration. Choosing period-appropriate fabrics helps maintain the aesthetic integrity of the piece.
