How do I identify a Gainsborough chair?

A Gainsborough chair is characterised by an open-armed timber frame enclosing an upholstered seat and back, standing on straight or cabriole legs. These pieces typically date from the eighteenth century or later revival periods and were built primarily for library or desk use.

How should I care for antique leather upholstery?

Historic leather requires gentle dusting and occasional specialist nourishment to prevent drying and cracking across the surface. Original hand-dyed hides benefit from minimal intervention to preserve their existing patina and colour.

Are French revival armchairs different from original pieces?

Revival items produced during the Victorian or Edwardian eras replicate earlier Louis XVI, Regence, or Directoire aesthetics using period-specific machinery and timber. Examining the internal construction and wood ageing helps distinguish eighteenth-century originals from nineteenth-century interpretations.
