How do I wire an antique metal lamp?

Rewiring requires running modern flexible cable through the original brass or iron stems to meet current electrical standards. Many collectors retain existing lampholders where possible to preserve the original patina. Professional rewiring ensures the metal body is properly earthed, keeping the lamp safe for daily domestic use.

What rooms suit a floor standard lamp?

Telescopic and scroll-arm floor standards work well beside armchairs or sofas to provide ambient reading light. Their adjustable heights help balance proportions in rooms with high ceilings. Placement near corners allows the heavy brass or wrought iron bases to anchor the seating arrangement without obstructing pathways.

How do I clean patinated brass?

Dusting with a dry microfibre cloth removes surface particles without disturbing the aged metallic finish. Avoid chemical polishes that strip away historical patination. Gentle wiping preserves the darker oxidation earned over the decades, maintaining the character of the piece.

Can I adjust an articulated desk lamp?

Articulated desk lamps incorporate pivot joints and screw adjustments designed for directing light beams across workspaces. Care should be taken when loosening older metal thumbscrews to avoid stressing threaded components. Regular movement prevents joints from seizing while maintaining the functional integrity of the arm.
