Will modern mattresses fit antique bed frames?

Many vintage and antique bed frames were built to historical dimensions rather than contemporary standard mattress sizes. Buyers often need to check specific internal measurements or arrange custom mattress fabrication to ensure a proper fit. Wooden slat systems or modern bed bases can sometimes be integrated within the existing rails to support contemporary mattresses safely without altering the exterior appearance of the frame.

How are four poster beds assembled?

Four-poster and tester beds utilise traditional knockdown joinery involving heavy timber posts, side rails, and a canopy frame secured with bolts or wooden pins. Assembling these large structures typically requires two people and careful alignment to keep the posts plumb. Professional installation is often recommended for heavy mahogany tester beds to ensure the overhead canopy and vertical columns are safely secured.

How do I care for mahogany furniture?

Mahogany surfaces benefit from regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional treatment with quality beeswax to nourish the timber. Avoiding direct sunlight and placing pieces away from heat sources prevents the wood from drying out or splitting. Keeping indoor humidity stable protects both the solid mahogany structure and any delicate marquetry or brass inlays applied to the frame.
