How do I identify a Georgian chest?

Georgian chests typically display hand-cut dovetail joints, solid mahogany construction, and understated bracket feet or ogee feet. They often feature brass swan-neck handles and well-proportioned graduated drawers. Later revival pieces from the twentieth century imitate these proportions but frequently employ machine-cut joints and different secondary timbers behind the mahogany facades.

What is a Scotch chest?

A Scotch chest is a heavy, robust form originating in Scotland during the nineteenth century, characterised by a deep secret drawer situated beneath the top surface. They usually feature bold wood grain and substantial proportions. These chests provide extra storage capacity compared to standard English bedroom chests of the same period.

How should I care for mahogany?

Protect mahogany furniture by placing it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying and the veneer from lifting. Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply occasional natural wax to nourish the grain. Avoid silicone-based polishes, which can build up on the surface and damage the antique finish over time.

What is a serpentine front?

A serpentine front curves outward in the middle and inward at the sides in an undulating wave shape. This complex profile requires exceptional cabinet making skill to execute successfully. Chests featuring this shape belong to the higher end of the range during the Georgian and later revival periods.
