How were these trunks used originally?

These boxes served as robust luggage for travellers moving belongings across land and sea during the coaching and steamship eras. They protected garments, blankets and valuables from rough handling and weather. Over time, many transitioned from transit gear into permanent domestic furniture used at the foot of beds or in living spaces for storage.

How do I date a leather trunk?

Dating relies on examining the construction materials, hardware styles, and any maker labels or stamps present on the piece. Regency and Victorian examples often feature distinct brass stud patterns and specific framing timbers. Earlier pieces from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries display heavier hand-worked iron fittings and simpler, pegged wooden joints.

Are these trunks suitable for daily storage?

These sturdy chests offer deep compartments that suit storing blankets, spare linen and winter garments in modern homes. Their robust timber and leather construction ensures they withstand everyday domestic use. Placing them away from direct heat sources helps preserve the vintage leather and prevents the wood from drying out.

What is a China Trade trunk?

China Trade trunks are storage chests produced in regions like Canton for export to Western markets during the nineteenth century. They frequently combine camphorwood frames with painted leather or elaborate brass hardware. These pieces reflect the cross-cultural exchange of goods and furniture styles popular among European and American travellers of the period.
