How do I use a heavy doorstop safely?

Place the heavy base firmly against the interior base of the door to hold it open against drafts. Ensure the weight matches the door size to prevent sliding on smooth floors.

How can I tell a Victorian piece apart?

Victorian examples often display specific figural subjects like Mr Punch, lions, and historical personalities cast in heavy iron. Construction details and traditional painted finishes help distinguish these nineteenth-century items from later reproductions.

What maintenance do iron doorstops need?

Keep the metal dry and free from moisture to prevent rust from forming on the surface. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might strip original painted decoration.

Were these items used only for doors?

Many heavy iron pieces served multiple domestic functions, doubling as fireplace ornaments or paperweights on large desks. Some related items, such as boot scrapers and hitching posts, remained fixed outdoors.
