What were antique caskets used for?

These lidded containers served specific domestic functions within period households, holding valuables, correspondence, tea, or sewing implements. Interiors were tailored with partitions, velvet pads, and removable trays to organise delicate personal possessions. Larger specimens functioned as stationary desks or presentation pieces on prominent tabletops. Their secure locks protected valuable contents before the advent of modern domestic security.

How do I identify Regency boxes?

Regency pieces often display strict architectural proportions with contrasting brass inlay or brass stringing. Rosewood and mahogany dominate this period, frequently accompanied by heavy brass carrying handles and recessed campaign styling. Earlier Georgian examples lean towards plain flame mahogany veneers and simple bracket feet. Later Victorian items introduced more eclectic decoration including mother-of-pearl and extensive Tunbridge mosaics.

Are original interiors common?

Many surviving boxes retain their original silk, velvet, or paper linings, though wear remains frequent due to age and active use. Trays and small compartment lids often remain intact, though missing internal elements occur. Replacement linings appear on pieces that underwent professional conservation. Buyers should inspect the glue blocks and hinge placements to verify the internal layout.

How should I clean wooden boxes?

Maintenance requires gentle dusting with a dry, soft cloth to protect the delicate veneer and inlaid elements. Avoid modern liquid polishes, water, and harsh chemical cleaners which damage historic French polish. Microcrystalline wax applied sparingly can nourish dry timber and preserve the historic shine. Keep boxes away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood shrinkage and veneer lifting.
