How do I wind a vintage mantel clock?

Most mechanical pieces on this page utilise a key-wound movement requiring a steady, gentle turn until resistance is felt. Care must be taken not to over-wind the mainspring. For eight-day models, winding is required approximately once a week to maintain accurate timekeeping and keep the internal mechanical train functioning properly.

Where should I place a heavy marble clock?

Due to the substantial weight of marble and green onyx bodies, these timepieces require a sturdy, level surface such as a fireplace mantel, heavy sideboard, or dedicated console table. Ensuring the surface is flat prevents any strain on the structural joints and stone bases of Victorian architectural and Art Deco designs.

How do I distinguish Victorian from Art Deco styles?

Victorian models tend to feature heavy stone bodies, classical or ornate ormolu mounts, and traditional painted dials. They often appear as large architectural pieces or complete garniture sets. Art Deco clocks embrace streamlined geometries, smooth green glass, chrome plating, and minimalist modernist dials typical of the nineteen-thirties.

What is a clock garniture set?

A garniture set consists of a central mantel clock accompanied by two matching side ornaments, traditionally designed to sit together on a fireplace mantel. These sets often incorporate matching marble, green onyx, or sculptural elements to create a unified decorative arrangement across a room.
