How do I hang a heavy framed oil painting safely?

Heavy wood and gesso frames require secure wall fixings directly into studs or solid masonry using appropriate steel screws and brackets. Wire thickness on the reverse must match the weight of the timber surround to ensure the piece hangs flat and stable.

Should I clean the surface of an old oil painting?

Surface dust can be removed gently with a very soft, dry brush, taking care near areas of craquelure or exposed canvas. Chemical cleaning or aggressive wiping should be left entirely to a professional conservator to protect the pigment layers.

How do I date a vintage oil frame?

Frame construction techniques, corner joints, and the composition of the gesso layer provide clear indicators of period manufacture. Changes in moulding profiles from the Victorian era through to mid-century modern designs help align the frame with the canvas.

Can I display these paintings in direct sunlight?

Intense natural light accelerates the degradation of oil pigments and can cause varnishes to yellow or discolour over decades. Positioning works away from harsh sunbeams preserves the original tone and prevents the timber frame from drying out excessively.
