How do I date an oil painting?

Examine the canvas weave, the stretcher frame construction, and the style of the pigments. Older works often use hand-woven linen and pegged wooden frames. Compare the clothing styles and hair of portrait subjects to historical eras. Frame construction also offers clues, as older gesso and gilt techniques differ from modern manufacturing methods.

Are these paintings original works?

The inventory consists of hand-painted original oil works, though some pieces are period copies after famous masters. Artists historically painted replicas of renowned compositions for study or private collections. Brush texture and canvas examination help distinguish an original hand-painted canvas from later printed reproductions. Look for raised paint ridges created by horsehair brushes.

How should I hang canvas art?

Use sturdy wall anchors matched to the weight of the timber and gesso frame. Heavy oil paintings require picture wire secured firmly to the primary stretcher frame rather than the backing. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and steady moisture sources to protect the oil paint and canvas tension. Stable indoor temperatures prevent the wood and canvas from warping.

What frames are original?

Original frames fit the exact dimensions of the canvas stretcher without visible gaps or overlapping rabbets. The wear on the gilt wood should match the age of the painting it surrounds. Inspect the corners and gesso mouldings for consistency with the period of the artwork. Replacements often use modern fastening hardware and synthetic gilding materials.
