What is a vintage drinks sideboard used for?

These cabinets serve as functional furniture pieces intended to house wine bottles, spirits, decanters, and glassware for entertaining guests. Many incorporate specialised interior compartments, pull-out preparation shelves, and mirrored display spaces designed specifically for mixing cocktails.

How do I identify an Art Deco drinks cabinet?

Art Deco pieces typically date from the 1930s and display geometric lines, symmetry, and smooth surfaces finished in burr walnut, mahogany, or exotic veneers. They frequently feature streamlined hardware, contrasting wood accents like sycamore, and fitted interiors meant for modern interwar entertaining.

What is the difference between a sideboard and a cocktail cabinet?

A standard sideboard provides general storage with cupboards and drawers for dining linen and tableware, whereas a cocktail cabinet focuses on beverage storage. Cocktail versions often include drop-down mixing flaps, bottle racks, and specialised glass holders rather than simple shelving.

Are these pieces made of solid wood?

While structural frames and legs are commonly built from solid timber such as oak or mahogany, the expansive surface areas often utilise decorative wood veneers. Craftsmen applied figured veneers like burr walnut over stable secondary woods to create striking grain patterns without risking timber warping.
