Where should I place a console table?

These narrow tables suit entrance halls, narrow corridors and behind sofas where floor space is limited. Their shallow depth allows them to sit flush against a wall without obstructing movement. They also function effectively in dining rooms as serving surfaces or in bedrooms as writing desks and dressing tables.

How do I care for antique pine?

Protect the timber by avoiding direct placement near heat sources or intense sunlight, which can dry out the wood and crack old paint. Maintain painted or waxed surfaces using a soft, dry cloth. Prevent moisture damage by using coasters and mats on the top board, particularly on tables with historical paint or delicate finishes.

What is the difference between standard and pitch pine?

Standard pine refers to softer, lighter yellow pine varieties common in general nineteenth-century domestic furniture. It provides a lighter colouration and takes paint readily. Pitch pine contains a higher resin content, resulting in a heavier, harder wood with a distinctively bold, striped grain pattern that resists wear.

How can I tell if the paint is original?

Original nineteenth-century paint surfaces exhibit natural wear patterns, oxidation and craquelure consistent with age. Under close examination, the layers show integration with the underlying pine substrate rather than modern adherence. Scumble glazes and hand-painted decorations from the period also display brush marks and patination that modern refinishing cannot replicate.
