What is included in a clock set?

A complete clock set includes a central mantel clock accompanied by a matching pair of sidepieces, such as urns or candelabras. These three components are designed to sit together harmoniously upon a mantelpiece or sideboard. The listings here show combinations of marble, slate and bronze elements created as unified decorative suites during the nineteenth century.

How do I wind the clock?

Most pieces utilise an eight-day mechanical movement that requires manual winding using a matching key inserted into specific holes on the enamel dial. This winds the internal springs that drive both the timekeeping and striking mechanisms. Careful handling of the key ensures the movement remains in working order without over-tensioning the internal springs.

Where were these clocks made?

Many of these clock sets originate from French workshops and makers operating during the nineteenth century. Parisian clockmakers and bronze founders produced a large proportion of the ornate garnitures found in this period. English homes frequently imported these elaborate French pieces during the Victorian era for formal reception rooms.

How do I style a clock set?

Position the central clock in the exact centre of a mantelpiece, shelf or console table with the two matching garniture pieces placed symmetrically on either side. This traditional arrangement creates a balanced focal point within a room. The substantial weight of marble and slate requires a sturdy surface capable of supporting heavy stone objects.
