Where were these showcases used?

These cabinets served both domestic interiors and commercial retail spaces during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Shopkeepers utilised countertop vitrines and wall-mounted units to merchandise goods, while households displayed collections in parlours.

How do I clean the glass?

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning solutions applied with a soft cloth rather than directly onto the timber frames. Avoid harsh chemicals that might damage antique wood finishes or historic hand-painted lettering.

Are the shelves adjustable?

Many commercial and domestic cabinets feature internal brackets allowing shelves to be repositioned for different objects. Fixed shelving is more common in smaller tabletop and wall-hanging variants.

What is sign-writing on cabinets?

Sign-writing refers to hand-painted commercial lettering applied to glass or timber advertising confectioners, tobacconists, and gunsmiths. These advertisements indicate the original retail environment where the showcase stood.
