Where were upholstered occasional chairs used?

These versatile seats were positioned in bedrooms, dressing rooms, hallways and drawing rooms to provide flexible seating where heavy armchairs were impractical. Their lighter frames allowed servants or residents to move them easily between rooms depending on the social demands of the day.

How do I identify a Victorian piece?

Victorian examples frequently feature dark timbers such as walnut or mahogany, deep buttoning, and distinctive shapes like balloon backs or low profiles for nursing. Mouldings and turned legs often display heavier proportions compared to the lighter, inlaid aesthetic of the subsequent Edwardian period.

Can I use these chairs daily?

Most antique occasional chairs are sturdy enough for regular sitting, provided the internal frame and webbing remain in sound condition. Pieces with delicate marquetry or intricate carved details benefit from careful placement to avoid heavy daily wear and tear.

What is a salon chair?

Salon chairs are decorative seats created for formal entertaining spaces, often featuring exposed wooden frames with carved or gilt finishes. They prioritise elegant silhouettes and fine upholstery fabrics over deep, enveloping comfort.
