How do I seat guests around a pedestal table?

The central column design removes corner legs, allowing chairs to tuck neatly underneath the overhang. Circular tops facilitate conversation, while multi-pillar extending tables accommodate larger gatherings through additional leaves.

Can I use a centre table for daily meals?

Centre tables serve multiple domestic functions depending on their original design and height. Many nineteenth-century examples work well for dining if the proportions align with standard chairs. Protecting the polished mahogany or rosewood surface with linens or mats preserves the historical finish during everyday use.

How do I tell a tilt-top table apart?

A tilt-top table incorporates a catch mechanism beneath the circular top that releases to fold the surface flat against the pedestal. This clever hinge allowed Georgian and Victorian households to reclaim floor space easily. Inspect the block beneath the top for original brass or iron latches that secure the table in the horizontal dining position.

What is a dumbwaiter used for?

Dumbwaiters acted as secondary serving stations in dining rooms during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Multiple graduating tiers held dishes, glassware, and cutlery out of the way of servants. The tiered trays often rotate on the central shaft, allowing diners to access items independently.
