How do I date a mahogany bookcase?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, timber choice, and stylistic cues such as proportions, cornices, and glazing bar thickness. Georgian pieces tend to show simpler internal framing and hand-cut dovetails, while later revivals often incorporate machine-cut elements. Hardware and secondary woods also offer clues. Oak secondary timbers and original brass locks point firmly towards earlier periods, whereas later Edwardian and revival pieces often display different interior drawer linings and standardised fixings.

What is a breakfront bookcase?

A breakfront bookcase is a large cabinet featuring a central section that projects further forward than the flanking sections. This design originates from grand eighteenth-century libraries and provides significant storage capacity. The tripartite configuration breaks up the expanse of timber and glass, creating an imposing architectural presence suitable for formal rooms.

How should I care for mahogany?

Maintenance involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the wood from drying out and the polish from fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the finish. A light application of quality beeswax once or twice a year helps nourish the mahogany and maintains its natural sheen without building up heavy residues.

Are the glass doors original?

Checking the glass involves looking for minor imperfections, waviness, and bubbles within the panes, which indicate older hand-rolled production methods. Modern replacement glass tends to be perfectly flat and uniform. Examining the putty and the internal rebate of the glazing bars also helps determine whether the glass has been replaced during the history of the piece.
