What did people carry in a pocket case?

These cases held the essential items of daily life before the modern era, protecting delicate objects inside pockets or handbags. Common contents included calling cards, matches, gold coins, stamps, and cigarettes. Specialised combination pieces allowed a user to carry multiple items simultaneously, such as matches paired with postage stamps or sealing wax.

How do I date a silver pocket case?

You determine the age of a sterling silver pocket case by reading the hallmarks stamped into the metal. These official marks reveal the assay office city, the silver standard, and a specific date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture. Stylistic clues like Art Deco geometric lines or Victorian floral engraving further help narrow down the production period when hallmarks are rubbed.

Are these cases still functional today?

Many antique silver pocket cases remain entirely functional, possessing working hinges, snap closures, and secure lid mechanisms. Modern owners frequently repurpose card cases for business cards and vesta cases for daily pocket organisation. Care should be taken with hinged lids and enamel surfaces to preserve their structural and decorative integrity during regular use.

What is a castle top card case?

A castle top card case is a highly decorative Victorian item featuring a detailed sculptural engraving of a famous building on the cover. Birmingham silversmiths excelled at producing these architectural masterworks in high relief. They represent some of the most sought-after examples of nineteenth-century pocketware due to their intricate craftsmanship and historical subject matter.
