What is a paper knife?

A paper knife is a desk tool used historically for slicing open sealed envelopes and separating the folded pages of uncut books. They were standard accessories on writing desks from the Georgian period through the mid-twentieth century. Unlike modern letter openers, many historical examples include longer blades made from organic materials like tortoiseshell or horn, serving as combined letter openers and page turners.

How do I date a silver letter opener?

Dating relies primarily on the British hallmarking system stamped directly onto the silver. These marks typically include a standard mark for sterling silver, an assay office mark, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of testing. Stylistic indicators also help, such as the geometric lines of Art Deco pieces or the ornate engraving characteristic of Victorian and Edwardian examples.

What materials are paired with silver?

Makers frequently paired sterling silver with organic materials like tortoiseshell, horn, and mother of pearl to create contrasting textures and lighter weights for page turners. Semi-precious stones such as citrine, agate, and Connemara marble occasionally appear on handles. Enamel, including guilloche work, was also applied to silver mounts to introduce colour to the desk accessory.
