How do I clean a vintage hip flask?

Rinse the interior thoroughly with warm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh abrasives that might damage cork seals or silver gilt linings. Polish the exterior silver gently with a specialised cloth to preserve the crispness of hallmarks and chased details. Allow the flask to dry completely with the cap open before storing it away. This prevents moisture retention inside the container.

Are these antique flasks still leakproof?

Most antique flasks rely on traditional cork inserts inside screw caps or bayonet fittings to maintain a seal. Over decades, these organic materials dry out and lose their original elasticity. Replacement corks can often be fitted by a specialist to restore functionality. However, many collectors prefer to display these pieces rather than use them for carrying liquids.

What is the purpose of the bottom cup?

The detachable cup fitted to the base of many glass and silver flasks allowed the owner to pour and share a measure while outdoors. These cups slide off or unscrew from the lower portion of the vessel. They frequently feature interior gilding to protect the taste of the spirit. Finding a flask with its original matching cup intact adds significantly to its completeness.

How can I date my silver flask?

Dating relies upon the official hallmarks stamped directly onto the silver mounts by British assay offices. A specific letter stamp corresponds to the exact year the piece was tested and marked. Additional style indicators, such as the geometric lines of Art Deco design or the heavy embossing of Victorian work, help narrow down the period of manufacture.
