What periods do these footstools come from?

The selection spans several centuries, with pieces originating from the late seventeenth century through the Georgian, Regency, and Victorian eras. Later examples also draw on earlier designs through revival movements like William and Mary.

How were these stools used historically?

These items served primarily as foot rests alongside chairs or sofas in period drawing rooms and dressing rooms. Larger scale ottomans and centre stools also functioned as casual seating or low display surfaces.

What woods are common in the frames?

Makers predominantly utilised durable hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak for structural stability. Rosewood and ebonised timber also appear on select nineteenth century examples.

Are the upholstery fabrics original?

Many pieces feature modern re-upholstery or recent textile covers while retaining their antique wooden frames. Survival of original needlepoint or fabric depends on the age and preservation history of each item.
