What is ruby flash glass?

Ruby flash glass is a clear glass object coated with a very thin layer of red glass. Artisans often cut through this red surface to create patterns. This method allows makers to combine the brilliance of clear crystal with a deep crimson exterior colour.

How do I clean ruby flash glass?

Clean these pieces gently using warm water and mild soap. Avoid abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals that might harm the surface. Take special care with items featuring gold leaf, enamel or gilding to preserve the decoration.

Is ruby glass the same as cranberry glass?

Ruby glass covers a broad spectrum of deep red glass types. Cranberry glass specifically refers to a transparent pinkish-red shade. Cranberry pieces are typically coloured using gold, whereas various metallic oxides produce different red hues.

How do I date these items?

Dating relies on manufacturing styles, cutting techniques and accompanying mounts. Victorian and Edwardian pieces show specific decorative motifs. English and Bohemian pieces from the nineteenth century often feature distinctive wheel-engraved vines and birds.
