How were these figures displayed?

Victorian households placed these ceramic ornaments on mantelpieces, sideboards, and shelves where the flat back could rest against a vertical surface. They were often arranged in pairs or groups, portraying royal family members or diplomatic allies together in domestic interiors.

How do I identify Victorian pieces?

Nineteenth-century pieces typically feature earthenware bodies finished with lead glazes and hand-painted enamel details depicting specific historical personalities. Subject matter such as Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and Napoleon III helps place these decorative figures firmly within the Victorian era.

What subjects are most common?

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert appear frequently, alongside family members like the Prince of Wales, Princess Royal, and Princess Alice. Other popular subjects include Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie, and decorative groupings such as royal children on horseback and royal goats.
