What were repousse silver pill boxes used for?

These containers were carried in pockets or kept on dressing tables to hold medicinal pills, herbal remedies, or powdered tobacco known as snuff. Their small scale made them practical personal accessories for daily use. Over time, owners also repurposed them to store other small valuables such as rings, locks of hair, or keepsakes.

How can I tell a Victorian box from a Georgian one?

Georgian examples often display neoclassical motifs, heavier gilding, and distinct assay office letters corresponding to early nineteenth-century London or provincial makers. Victorian pieces frequently incorporate heart shapes, floral scrolls, and regional British hallmarks from Birmingham or Chester. Examining the style of the repousse work and any accompanying stamped date letters helps clarify the period of manufacture.

Are these boxes made of solid silver?

The listings include solid silver, sterling silver, and silver-gilt items, alongside continental export pieces and occasional silver-plated variants. British examples typically meet sterling standards, verified by the presence of traditional assay hallmarks. Descriptions often note specific weights in grams to indicate the heft of the solid metal used in construction.

How should I clean a antique silver pill box?

Cleaning requires a soft cloth and minimal interference with the dark patination accumulated in the recesses of the repousse work. Aggressive polishing can flatten the crisp details achieved by the original metalworker. Store the items in dry conditions to prevent excessive tarnishing and protect the delicate hinges and closures.
