What is a regency mahogany nightstand?

A regency mahogany nightstand is a small bedside table or cabinet made from mahogany, associated with the early nineteenth-century Regency style. These pieces provide surface space and enclosed storage next to a bed. They appear in various forms, including cylindrical cupboards, pedestal units, and small side tables with drawers or open shelves.

How were these nightstands used historically?

Historically, these pieces functioned as bedside storage for personal items, night-lights, and chamber pots in bedrooms. Their compact size allowed them to sit conveniently beside beds of the period. Many designs included enclosed cupboards to keep items out of sight, while others provided open tiers or pull-out surfaces for reading materials.

How do I identify a Regency period piece?

Identification relies on architectural details such as reeded legs, brass lion paw castors, flame mahogany veneers, and classical proportions. Regency design draws heavily on ancient Greek and Roman forms. Nomenclature also spans Georgian and William IV eras, with later revival pieces emerging in the Edwardian period and the nineteen-thirties.

Can I use antique nightstands as bedside tables today?

These tables adapt easily to modern bedrooms, offering compact proportions that fit beside contemporary bed heights. Their drawers and cupboards provide practical storage for modern accessories. Pairs offer symmetrical placement, while single tables serve as accent pieces or lamp tables in smaller spaces.
