What is a pole screen used for?

These screens were placed between seated guests and the open fireplace to deflect excessive radiant heat from the face and protect ladies' wax-based cosmetics from melting. They also served a decorative purpose, displaying fine needlework and embroidery when the hearth was not actively burning a fire.

How do you adjust the panel height?

Pole screens typically utilise a sliding collar or internal friction mechanism housed within the screen mount. This allows the user to slide the panel vertically along the central pole and secure it at the desired height. Owners should support the weight of the panel by hand while adjusting it to avoid straining the brass fittings or timber groove.

Are these screens stable on carpets?

Most antique pole screens feature a tripod base with three splayed legs that provide a wide footprint for balance. While stable on firm surfaces, thick modern carpets can occasionally cause the weighted base to sit unevenly. Placing the screen carefully and avoiding high-traffic pathways helps prevent accidental tipping in active rooms.

How do I care for the needlework panel?

The textile panels require protection from direct sunlight to prevent the coloured wool and threads from fading over time. Gentle dusting with a soft brush helps remove surface particles without disturbing the aged fabric.
